And although the CEO of lifestyle brand Uncommon James spent her childhood and early teen years in Denver and the suburbs of Chicago, respectively, and has made Nashville her home for the last several years, the sentiment remains the same. The relaxed, carefree, no-B.S. attitude that first won over fans during those Laguna Beach days is alive and well, as evidenced most recently by her newly launched podcast, Let’s Be Honest, in which she shares refreshing takes on everything from dating advice to beauty secrets to her philosophy on food and fitness. Below are the three things Gupta said are important for living a long, healthy, and happy life.

1. Talk to people who are older

Gupta said you can learn a lot from asking older people about their routines — especially if they’re in great health.

When he interviewed his mother, he learned that she sleeps 8-9 hours a night, tries not to dwell on negative thoughts, and keeps active throughout the day with walks, water aerobics, and having friends over.

He also has friends over 60 who are constantly moving and challenging their bodies the same way they did when they were in their 30s. As a result, they don’t feel the same stiffness and pain other people their age do.

Gupta said that talking to them paints “a much more optimistic picture” about aging.

2. Have a positive attitude towards aging

Gupta believes we live in a “youth-centric society” where we focus more on anti-aging than embracing old age.

But even though the season invites us all to be a little more carefree, it’s important to be aware of the health and safety issues that can impact dogs during the hotter months. To help you prioritize your pup’s well-being, Dr. Colleen Fisher, a veterinarian in Brandon, Man., and Dr. Karen Sheehan, a clinical associate at Saskatoon’s Western College of Veterinary Medicine offered these tips. 

By taking a few precautions and being prepared, you’ll be set for an unforgettable summer with your pooch. 

Stay up to date with vaccines

Making sure your dog has all their vaccines should be high on your summer-safety checklist since many diseases and viruses are more transmissible in warmer weather (think rabies, distemper, parvovirus and leptospirosis). “Just like people in the summer in Canada, dogs typically are going to be more active outside and potentially engaging with wildlife,” Sheehan explained. Both Sheehan and Fisher say it’s crucial to speak with your veterinarian about what shots will be best for your dog. 

Sheehan also recommends consulting with your veterinarian if you’re planning on travelling. Certain vaccinations may not be necessary where you live but could be critical in another province or country, she said.

For dogs who will be visiting dog parks or doggy daycare, Fisher suggests having them vaccinated for “kennel cough,” which can easily spread in areas where multiple dogs are congregating.

In a small 2022 study, researchers measured the effectiveness of prune juice for relieving chronic constipation. The 84 participants were divided into two groups — one consumed prune juice and the other a placebo.

After 3 weeks, the prune treatment group’s stool had significantly softened. After 7 weeks, their rates of normal stool were much higher.

Why does weight change as we age?

A cup of wild blueberries is more than a tasty snack, according to a new study from King’s College London Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine in the United Kingdom. It can also provide a brain boost, lower blood pressure, and contribute to better cardiovascular health.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found that blueberry eaters exhibited improved executive function, strengthened short-term memory, and had faster reaction times.

Study participants who had a daily drink made out of 26 grams (g) of freeze-dried wild blueberry powder for 12 weeks saw a 3.59 millimeters of mercury (mmHG) reduction in systolic blood pressure, and improved blood vessel function compared to individuals consuming a placebo powder.

Participants who consumed blueberries were better at immediately recalling word lists, and exhibited improved switching accuracy. The researchers observed no improvement in delayed recall, however.

The study appears in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The study involved 61 healthy male and female participants from London, aged between 65–80 years. Over 12 weeks, half of them drank a beverage each day containing 26 g of freeze-dried wild blueberry powder, while the other half consumed a taste-, appearance-, macro-nutrient-, fiber-, and vitamin C-matched placebo.
