Amazon Pharmacy is Piloting A Consultation Program With One Medical, Further Bolstering Amazon’s Healthcare Ecosystem

Amazon is forging ahead with its ambitious vision to re-imagine healthcare. Its latest initiative in this effort is to start integrating two of its most successful ventures: Amazon Pharmacy and One Medical.

Amazon Pharmacy revealed that it is piloting a program to provide pharmacy consultation services to One Medical providers, specifically for those that see high risk and complex care patients through initiatives like the One Medical Seniors at Home program. Both silos have been incredibly successful in their own right. One Medical is a primary care service that Amazon completed acquisition of in early 2023; the organization provides in-office and 24/7 virtual care services with the goal of improving the quality and accessibility of primary care and chronic care management. Similarly, Amazon Pharmacy has seen incredible success in its mission to transform medication access and management; just in October of last year, the organization started piloting even faster access via drone delivery, indicating its commitment to continued innovation.

This new pilot program enables One Medical providers to easily request pharmacist consultations for things such as simple medication reviews or for more complicated needs, such as a comprehensive review of medication interactions.

Dr. Vin Gupta, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of Amazon Pharmacy, explains that the concept of getting pharmacist consultations in inpatient/hospital settings is quite common—however, the practice is nearly non-existent in outpatient settings. Ironically, however, outpatient settings frequently entail complicated medication management issues, especially when it comes to senior and complex care populations. This is where Amazon Pharmacy can help, especially in the broader context of Amazon’s healthcare ecosystem, Dr. Gupta explains: “people are always asking about how our services are connected, and this just seems like such a natural way to interconnect some of our best resources.”

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The Medical Society of P.E.I. is stepping away from recruiting physicians after managing a program known as physicians recruiting physicians for three years.

In November 2020, the society was contracted by the Department of Health and Wellness to manage the program. Three years later, the MSPEI, which represents 400 physicians in the province, credits this program with helping to recruit 81 physicians to the province. As part of the program, the medical society hired Dr. Megan Miller as its chief physician recruiter to help guide new doctors through the province’s recruitment process.

While much of the focus in recent years has been on P.E.I.’s shortage of physicians, the MSPEI program has demonstrated success. Evaluations of the physicians recruiting physicians program have shown that new doctors were satisfied with the program.

However, in an Oct. 31 email to members, MSPEI president Krista Cassell said in the program’s three-year tenure, it did not succeed in “creating more cohesion between the physician hiring and onboarding process” and in reducing recruitment barriers.

“Earlier this spring, MSPEI met with the Department and Health P.E.I. to discuss the future of our contract,” Cassell said in the Oct. 31 email. “While all parties saw value in the shared recruitment model, Health P.E.I.’s leadership team cited that lack of autonomy and accountability in owning the recruitment process was a significant barrier.”

Hospital program to increase patients’ access to their health records

Patients at Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital now have a new way of accessing their health records and receiving information from their care team.

The two hospitals last week launched My Connected Care, an online portal that allows patients to view things such as laboratory and diagnostic reports, read clinical notes from their care team and book upcoming appointments.

This program was developed due to the growing trend of leveraging digital systems to “empower patients,” said Dr. Payal Agarwal, joint chief medical information officer for both hospitals.

“We know that patients who have access to their own information, feel more empowered, feel that they’re better positioned to be active members of their care team and that it actually creates more trust between patients and the health system,” Argawal explained.

“Previously there was a sort of a more clunky, longer way for patients to access their records through paper, but this new portal is great because it gives patients essentially real-time access to a lot of their health information,” she said.

The program is intended to enhance the personal aspect of healthcare and not take away from it, said Argarwal

“Having that time to reflect on your results, either before the time you have with your care team or after the time you have with your care team to come more prepared with questions [next time], can actually really enhance the value of that time you have with your provider.”

My Connected Care was soft launched last November in selected clinics in the hospitals, including the Heart Function Clinic at St. Mary’s.

“My Connected Care has empowered me,” said Greg Griffin, a patient in that clinic, in a release announcing the program. “I feel like a full partner in the management of my healthcare.”

Audit finds Morrison-era health department deliberately breached guidelines administering $2bn program | Australian politics

The federal health department “fell short of ethical requirements” and deliberately breached commonwealth grant guidelines in administering a $2bn Morrison government community health program, the audit office has ruled in a blistering report.

The Australian National Audit Office found just two of 63 major projects were assessed as “highly suitable” for the Community Health and Hospitals Program (CHHP), which was meant to be a key benchmark to even be shortlisted.

“The Department of Health and Aged Care’s administration of the Community Health and Hospitals Program was ineffective and fell short of ethical requirements,” the ANAO said.

The health minister, Mark Butler, has savaged his predecessors for announcing projects “without assessment or guidance” and ordered his department to “run the ruler” over remaining projects funded in the program.

The audit office said the CHHP included $1.25bn in the 2018–19 mid-year economic and fiscal outlook and $747m in the 2019–20 budget, both ahead of the May 2019 election.

The ANAO said the CHHP and associated programs comprised 171 projects, including 108 grants and 63 national partnership agreement projects with state or territory governments. The health department did not develop grant guidelines for seven of the 108 grants; the ANAO claimed at least three of those were a “deliberate decision by senior management to not comply with finance law”.

“Health’s administration of CHHP grants was not appropriate, involving deliberate breaches of the relevant legal requirements and the principles underpinning them,” the ANAO said.

“Health recommended funding multiple grants prior to confirming that there was lawful authority for grants, or despite knowing that there was no legislative authority.”

The department established an expression of interest process for potential projects and assessed applicants, but the ANAO said “most approved projects were selected by government outside this process”.

The ANAO alleged: the department did not advise
