Pediatric health services in Peel and Halton regions got a $5.6 million boost.

The Ontario government announced it is allocating $5.6 million to pediatric health services at hospitals and community-based health care facilities in Peel and Halton.

“The pediatric funding provided to services in Peel and Halton regions will have a tremendous impact on children and their families, ensuring they receive faster access to care when they need it,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health at the announcement today (Feb. 5) in Mississauga.

The $5.6 million in additional funding will support programs and services at the ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development ($3.7 million), Halton Healthcare ($1.5 million), and Mississauga Health – Ontario Health Team ($400,000).

ErinoakKids serves children and youth with disabilities. Clients have a wide range of physical and/or developmental disabilities, communication disorders and autism. The Ontario government funds mandatory services and additional services are funded through private and corporate donors.

The $5.6 million funding will be used to:

  • Increase access to children’s rehabilitation services, including speech-language pathology, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy, as well as preschool speech and language programs at the ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development.
  • Expand access to mental health services and supports at Halton Healthcare’s Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital to connect children and youth struggling with an eating disorder to social workers, dieticians, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists and a pediatrician to help them re-establish consistent eating patterns through their individual care and recovery plans.
  • Expand Halton Healthcare’s Navigator Program, so it can provide more support to children and youth who are at risk of hospitalization or who are transitioning to home from the inpatient setting or the emergency department.
  • Increase the number of people who can be seen, triaged and cared for at Trillium Health Partners

Health department prepares for child dental screening required by new legislation

GAYLORD — Vision and hearing screenings have been part of how families prepare for the big day — their child’s first day of kindergarten — for decades. Children enrolling into their first year of school will now receive an oral health screening, too.

“Dental health is often overlooked when we talk about the health and development of our kids,” Health Department of Northwest Michigan (HDNW) Health Officer Dan Thorell said in a statement. “Families need access to care to ensure their children stay healthy and have every advantage education provides.”

A primary way access to dental care is being addressed through a new state law requiring the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to establish and maintain a program with local health departments, including HDNW. The program, called Kindergarten Oral Health Assessment (KOHA), is expected to serve 112,000 students statewide.

In Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet and Otsego counties, the program will be led by HDNW school oral health staff, the same staff who has been doing these screenings in schools for years.

“KOHA expands on what HDNW started in 2011 based on local need,” said Dawn Marie Strehl, HDNW Regional Oral Health Coordinator. “The screenings are required; however, parents and guardians may have their regular providers complete a form saying the children have a dental home and have already had the needed exam.”

The Health Department of Northwest Michigan (HDNW) is working with registered dental hygienists to train for and schedule school oral health screenings throughout the region’s 31 counties. The team includes (from left) Rene Louchart, Caroline Sarya, Angie Sutton, Dawn Marie Strehl and Valerie Witt. Missing is Kara McLellan.

Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease, five times more common than asthma. In Michigan, almost half of the Head Start children have tooth decay. More than half of the children in Michigan do not see a dentist each year. The goal of this program is to establish a dental home for each child.

HDNW is scheduling screening days during kindergarten round-ups and health fairs in the spring. The dates will be shared by the

Child vaccine oversight in Philadelphia slipped during the COVID pandemic

The Philadelphia health department failed to properly supervise medical clinics that provide routine childhood vaccines at the height of the COVID-19 crisis, the city’s controller found in an audit released Tuesday.

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health acknowledged their staff skipped some on-site visits required by the federal government to ensure vaccines are properly stored and safeguarded. The audit from the Office of the Controller focused on a federal grant that supported routine childhood vaccinations, such as those for polio, rotavirus, hepatitis B, and measles, mumps, and rubella, from July 2020 through July 2021.

“A lack of proper oversight of the program can result in vaccines being improperly safeguarded or wasted,” Charles Edacheril, the acting city controller, said in a statement. ”Additionally, if we don’t have complete or up-to-date records for administered vaccines, that could result in health issues for those who need to receive those vaccines.”

The health staffers responsible for these checks were busy at the time conducting COVID testing, responding to outbreaks in nursing homes, and helping to administer COVID vaccines, health department spokesperson James Garrow said in a statement issued Tuesday in response to the audit.

There’s no evidence that the lax oversight resulted in significant waste or harm, the statement said.

The audit reviewed records from the federal Vaccines for Children program, which provides doctors’ offices with free vaccines for children who are uninsured or underinsured.

Roughly 150 medical offices in the city participated in the program in 2021. The city health department must conduct on-site visits once every two years to comply with the requirements of the federal Department of Health and Human Services.

The issue came to light through an audit of all city programs funded by federal grants.

Pink for women and blue for boys is a somewhat new internet marketing scheme, pushed by makers who desired to double their earnings. It’s only been a ‘thing’ for the past 50 many years but men and women are so invested in it.”

Just after Thompson had her daughter, she started off her own clothing line focusing
