Towing can be defined as connecting two or more objects for them to be pulled together to a given destination. For one to be able to tow, the vehicle must be attached to the power source using either a rope or a chain. Connecting the vehicle to a tow truck is the most common towing. Other types of towing such as the tractor-trailer combination and the trailer attached to a small picnic vehicle also exist. To make sure that there is timely dispatch of appropriate towing and recovery assets to the scene a contact list of towing and recovery companies who have been pre-approved regarding equipment and capabilities should be available.
When an accident occurs, that is when the towing companies are called to the scene. Incidences that require the towing services include single vehicle crashes, vehicle breakdowns, vehicle collisions and when traffic police are towing the vehicles of the offenders.
When they arrive at the scene, the towing companies have different responsibilities and expectations that they are supposed to meet. These expectations include :
The whole scene area should be safe. Police and the relevant authorities should be alerted. They also find ways of preventing further accidents or damages by alerting the approaching traffic in case the traffic police are not there. Removing the vehicle from the road is the next step. Protection from harm should be offered to the people present in that scene.
The injured victims should be attended to. It is a requirement that the people involved in the towing process wear the appropriate PPE. The pieces that remain on the scene should be cleared off.
Next, they recover and position the vehicles in a place where they can be hooked up to the towing truck for transportation. The vehicles are towed using the winch and other rigging tools. To ensure that the damage to the vehicle is not added, they should follow the vehicles manufacturers guidelines of towing the vehicle. The victims should be taken care of during this process.
When they tow the vehicle, the companies ensure that there are no further damages to the vehicle. An example is making sure that all the loose wires are taken care of to avoid fires. To avoid all of them the vehicles should be handled with extra care. Parts of the vehicles which are loose should be properly tied together for easier towing.
The vehicles should be stored securely in the tow station until the owners claim their vehicles back or right action for the vehicles recovery is taken.
