Is
Swimming Good Exercise for Golf?
"Sean,
I
just received and started using your golf
training manual. I can already tell a
difference. My question is the following: Is
swimming a good exercise for golf?"
Thanks for Your Response,
Jeff Rogers
Great to hear the
immediate benefits you are finding with the use of
my golf fitness programs. I will look forward to
hearing about your continued success.
Swimming in general is a
great mode of exercise. Regardless if you are a
golfer or not I recommend it as form of exercise.
Let me explain why.
Swimming is a form of
exercise that gives you a lot of "bang for your
buck" so to speak. First off it is a great form of
aerobic training to assist in the development of the
cardio-pulmonary (i.e. heart and lungs) system of
the body. Not to mention the benefits aerobic
training has in relation to weight loss. Another
great characteristics of swimming is the non-weight
bearing mode of the activity.
The water acts as
buoyancy in relation to your body weight, taking
much of the stress off your joints. If you suffer
from "bad knees" you know exactly what I talking
about. Finally, the water acts as a form of
resistance against the muscles of your body as you
swim.
Relative to golf and
improving your game, swimming can be a component of
a comprehensive golf fitness program, but I would
not suggest it being the only form of training
participated in. The golf swing requires certain
levels of flexibility, balance, strength, endurance,
and power to be developed within the body. This
requires the utilization of a golf fitness program
that incorporates exercises to develop each and
every component mentioned in the sentence above.
Swimming will not address each and every component
required of the golf swing. Jeff, I would suggest to
incorporate a swimming program in conjunction with
your current golf fitness program.
Best of luck with your
golf fitness program and be sure to keep me in the
loop on your continued success."
Sincerely,
Sean Cochran
