Staying Mentally Focused During Your Round
I was at Winged Foot all day and what a tough course! One player is in the red going into the weekend and watching the number one player in the world shoot twelve over says just how hard this course is playing.
Watching players go through certain holes, pins were just not accessible and the slightest error resulted in a bogey. Amazing how these players kept their rounds in tact. One of the commentators on the Golf Channel had a great quote. He said Thursday and Friday has tested these player's physical abilities and the weekend will now test their mental abilities.
I could not agree with him more. Whoever wins the 2006 US Open will need nerves of steel, patience, and a mental fortitude of the highest level.
It brings me to a good point of how to mentally stay focused during a round.
I see it often where amateurs will be thinking about a bad shot that happened two holes ago and it completely ruins their round.
One bad shot leads to another and more quickly than you can count to fifty their round is in the tank!
So the question on the table is:
How can we develop the mental focus for this great game of golf?
Well, I can say it begins a long time before you step up to the first tee.
I found through my years spent in professional athletics there is a formula that can be quite successful.
Mental preparation for golf begins with your body and your golf swing.
I found the development of mental focus and confidence in your golf game or any athletic endeavor begins with developing;
The mechanics of your golf swing and a body to support your golf swing.
Developing the mechanics of your golf swing and developing efficiency within them.
Allows you to have confidence in the shots required during a round of golf.
In addition developing a body to support your golf swing provides you a foundation to execute those mechanics at any given time.
Once these two components are in place. Mentally focusing throughout an entire round becomes a much more simple of a process.
Make It Happen!
