Keeping Your Lower Back Healthy All Season Long
I talked to my buddy yesterday and it seems his lower back is getting better. If you recall he "tweak" his lower back during a round last weekend, and has been hobbling around all week.
He followed some of my advice, sought some medical attention, got some massage work done on it, and he is no longer walking around like the "Hunch Back of Notre Dame".
It may be a week or so more before he can hit the links, but it looks like he is back on track.
He is planning to start the LOWER BACK FLEXIBILITY exercises I gave him on Monday, and then gradually implement the LOWER BACK STRENGTHENING EXERCISES later on in the week.
This should as we have discussed help prevent an additional lower back injury occurring from playing golf.
As a result of this little incident my friend FINALLY recognized the importance of GOLF FITNESS EXERCISES.
He now understands how important it is to keep the body in "golfing shape", especially as you get OLDER.
He ain't no "spring chicken anymore" and his forty-first birthday is in about a month.
I do know he is now planning to stick with a golf fitness program of exercises to keep him on the links.
I have one more conversation to have with my buddy in the next week and it is about endurance.
"The golf swing is a repetitive movement performed over and over again."
This will be my mantra during the next conversation.
Keeping the LOWER BACK strong and flexible is ABSOLUTELY necessary, but in addition we have to develop some endurance.
I am not talking about the type of endurance to run a marathon, but rather developing
LOWER BACK MUSCULAR ENDURANCE.
Basically, in order to swing the golf club over and over and over again during a round or entire season.
The muscles in your lower back must have high levels of MUSCULAR ENDURANCE.
This allows these muscles to continue to execute the golf swing, and withstand the STRESSES of the golf swing without becoming FATIGUED.
Once your lower back muscles are fatigued, the golf swing will FALTER and you are one step away from INJURY.
Basically we need to do THREE THINGS with the LOWER BACK to keep it HEALTHY:
Number One: Keep it FLEXIBLE
Number Two: Keep it STRONG
And
Number Three: Develop ENDURANCE
You do these three things and the possibility of a lower back injury is very small.
Make It Happen!
