How to Hit It Straight and Long, US Open Style
We arrived to New York yesterday and the rain is upon us today. We are all suppose to head to the Yankees vs. Red Sox game
tonight, hopefully the downpour will end.
The next week and a half is a build up to US Open at Winged Foot. Phil went immediately to the course for practice after we got off the plane, and I heard some very interesting points about the course. I actually had dinner with Phil's caddie, "Bones" last night. He was telling me the rough was so high if you hit it off the fairway, it will be very difficult to find (and he is a professional caddie, think how hard it would be for us common folk to find our ball).
It appears that the 2006 US Open at Winged Foot is going to require some straight tee shots with distance. Anything off line is going to have to be "hacked out" if you can even find it!
A question I get all the time and a desire of most every golfer is:
How can I hit it longer, maybe longer and straight is a better way to phrase it?
Increased driving distance is a simple equation when you break it down (nothing like those calculus classes we had in high school).
Increased Clubhead Speed = Increased Driving Distance
If you impact the golf ball with a higher rate of clubhead speed, a greater amount of energy will be translated into the golf ball, equaling longer drives.
Now the next part of the equation relates to power.
Increased Power = Increased Clubhead Speed
In order to increase the clubhead speed in my drives I need to get more power out of my swing.
So the real question to ask;
How do I get more power in my golf swing?
Creating more power in your golf swing comes down to 3 separate yet connected entities.
The 3 Components of Increased Power in Your Golf Swing are:
-
Golf Swing Mechanics: the more efficient of a golf swing, the greater amount of power will be delivered to the golf ball.
-
Your Body: your body executes the mechanics of the golf swing, the ability of your body to generate more power will equate to increased clubhead speed.
-
Equipment: Golf clubs matched to your swing will provide the greatest probability to generate maximum clubhead speed.
Like I said it is a pretty simple equation when you break it down. Tomorrow we will talk about how to hit it straighter (taking a page out of Fred Funk's book).
