I Recently Needed to Jump Start My Golf Fitness Program!

I hit a plateau a month or so ago with my workouts. I felt like I was in a little rut, not making the gains that I wanted with my goals.

Hitting the Golf Ball Straighter

It rained all day and the Yankees vs. Red Sox game was called, but believe it or not they still played the Pro-am for the Barclay's classic in a torrential down poor. The tournament starts today and again the sky is filled with some dark clouds. Hopefully, the players will get their rounds of golf completed today.

Yesterday we discussed the components of hitting the golf ball longer. If you recall three separate yet connected entities allow you to hit the golf ball farther. These three components are:

  1. Swing Mechanics
  2. Your Body
  3. Equipment
The seamless integration of these three components allows you to hit longer tee shots. Interestingly enough hitting straight shots comes down to these three components as well.

Let me explain, first and foremost we have swing mechanics. Developing efficient swing mechanics allow you to square the clubface at impact and hit relatively straight shots.

Remember, straight is a relative word when discussing ball flight.

Secondly, your body executes the mechanics of the golf swing. If your body is inflexible, out of balance, and weak, performing the mechanics of the golf swing will be difficult. Resulting in quite a lot of difficulty in squaring the clubface at impact.

I see this time and time again with amateurs. The development of compensations in the mechanics of the golf swing as a result of a body that is inflexible and weak.

Finally we have equipment. I was speaking to Phil's caddie about this just yesterday. He has some new Callaway X-18 irons. Bones is a pretty good golfer, a 4 handicap from what I remember. The X-18 irons are typically for handicappers in the range of 10-20.

I asked him why he has this type of club and he simply said he needs a club that he can get the ball up in the air, and right now he does not play enough golf to warrant using blades.

A good little story of how it is necessary to match your equipment with your level of play.

So remember if you want to hit straight shots as well as long shots the equation remains the same:

  1. Develop Efficient Swing Mechanics
  2. Develop a Flexible, Balanced, and Strong Body
  3. Select Clubs to Match Your Handicap and Swing

Again, I hope we get some golf in today. Just to give you a little idea of why many players like the Barclay's Classic as a warm-up for the US open. Westchester Country Club has 8 dog legs left, and Winged Foot has 10 dog legs left.
